Before

Keep cool and entertain at the same time with this amazing picnic table with a hidden cooler!

STEP 1:  Cut your wood into the following sizes:

Table and Seat Top(s) (2 x 8): 5 at 3’ long

Legs (2 x 4): 4 at 23” long with 30-degree cuts on the end to make a trapezoid

Batten (2 x 6): 2 at 22” with 30-degree cuts on the end to make a trapezoid

Seat Support (2 x 4): 2 at 37 ½” with 30-degree cuts on the end to make a trapezoid

Brace (2 x 4): 26 ⅞” long

STEP 2: Align each leg so the top of the leg is flush with the top of the batten. Ensure the outside edge of the leg is flush with the bottom corner of the 30-degree cut edge of the batten and attach the batten to the legs using 2 ½” deck screws.

STEP 3: On the same side of the legs that the batten is on, measure up 12 ¾” from the bottom of the leg and align the top of the seat supports (long part of the board on top) with the 12 ¾” line. Adjust the board until the middle of the seat support lines up with the middle of the batten and install seat supports to legs using 2 ½” deck screws.

STEP 4: Align the middle of the brace with the (inside) middle of the seat supports and attach from the outside of the seat supports using 3” deck screws.

STEP 5: Using 2x4 material, build a picture frame-style box (board lying flat) around the top of your window planter box. These measurements will vary depending on the size of the window planter box that you buy. Once the top of the window planter is framed, lay a 2x4 on the bottom of the window planter. Make sure the 2x4 is on its flat side, 2” in from the ends of the window planter and then measure the gap. Cut pieces to fill those gaps and attach them together using 3” deck screws.

STEP 6: Screw the window planter mount to the bottom of the 2x8 top boards using 2 ½” deck screws. Make sure the planter sits in the centre of the middle board before you start attaching. Cut the middle board 8 ⅜” from both ends to make the lid of the cooler. Flip the boards so that it is top down.

STEP 7: Place the base onto the top of the picnic table, 3” from the sides and flush with the long edges of the top, and attach the top with 3” deck screws, through the top into the legs.

STEP 8: Using Varathane Classic Wood Filler, fill all the dents and knots in the wood, focusing primarily on the top of the table. Once the filler has hardened, sand the table.

STEP 9: Using Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2X in the colour of your choice, spray the sides of the top piece first on each coat, then spray the top with a steady hand that is 8”-12” away from the boards.

STEP 10: To seal the top, spray three coats of Varathane Diamond Wood Finish Outdoor, sanding with 220-grit sandpaper in between coats. To seal/ give a nice warm look to the base, apply two coats of WATCO Tung Oil – you do not need to sand between coats.

ENJOY!!!
